빌 게이츠 게이츠 재단 이사장을 만나 뜻깊은 대화를 나눴습니다. ‘윈도우즈’를 만들어 전 세계인의 세상을 보는 창을 넓혀준 게이츠 이사장은 최근 글로벌 보건과 지속가능한 에너지 등 인류를 위한 공공재 창출에 앞장서고 있습니다. 

우리 정부와 국내 의료·바이오 기업들은 백신 개발을 비롯한 글로벌 보건 분야에서 게이츠 재단과 함께 눈에 띄는 성과를 거두고 있습니다. 앞으로도 다양한 글로벌 보건기구와 협력하며 국제 사회 책임강국으로서의 역할을 다하겠습니다. 

자랑스러운 우리 대한민국은 원조를 받던 최빈국에서 선진국으로 성장한 경험을 바탕으로, 공적개발원조를 꾸준히 이어가며 국제기여의 폭도 더욱 확장시켜 나갈 것입니다. 

아울러 게이츠 이사장은 방미 일정을 언급하며 트럼프 대통령과의 대화에서 좋은 결실을 맺기를 바란다고 격려했고, 쉽지 않은 일이지만 지혜롭게 대화를 이어가겠다고 화답했습니다. 글로벌 도전과제 해결을 위해 헌신하는 게이츠 이사장에게 깊은 경의를 표합니다. 

I met with Mr. Bill Gates, Chairman of the Gates Foundation, and we had a meaningful conversation. Mr. Gates, who pioneered the development of Windows software, opened new possibilities for people around the world to broaden their perspectives through web-connected virtual windows. Today, he is leading efforts to advance public goods in critical areas such as global health and sustainable energy. 

Notable achievements have already been made in public health, including the development of vaccines through collaborations between the Korean government, Korean biomedical companies, and the Gates Foundation. The Republic of Korea will continue to fulfill its role as a responsible global power by working closely with global health organizations. 

The Republic of Korea, as the first country in history to transition from an international aid recipient to a developed donor, will uphold its ODA commitments and further expand its contributions to the global community. 

Mr. Gates wished me success at the summit with President Trump during my upcoming visit to the United States. I responded by assuring him that I intend to hold a thoughtful discussion addressing the challenging agenda ahead. My sincere appreciation goes to Mr. Gates for his unwavering dedication to tackling global challenges.
