오늘 페르디난드 로무알데즈 마르코스 주니어 필리핀 대통령과 취임 후 첫 통화를 나눴습니다. 필리핀은 아시아 국가 중 최초이자 최대 규모로 한국전쟁에 참전한 오랜 우방국입니다.

우리나라가 현재 필리핀의 최대 투자국이 된 점에 주목하며, 해상 교량과 철도 등 인프라, 조선 산업, 방산 등 다양한 분야에서 호혜적 협력을 확대해 나가기로 마르코스 대통령과 뜻을 모았습니다.

또한 지금까지 10만 명이 넘는 필리핀 노동자들이 한국에서 근무하며 양국 우호 증진에 기여한 점에 감사를 표하고, 국내 외국인 노동자의 안정적인 생활 여건 조성을 위해 노력하겠다는 의지도 밝혔습니다.

앞으로도 마르코스 대통령과 APEC 정상회의 등을 통해 직접 만나, 양국 관계 발전 및 글로벌 도전과제 대응을 위한 협력 방안을 긴밀히 논의할 수 있길 기대합니다.

I was pleased today to have my first telephone conversation with President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. of the Republic of the Philippines.

The Philippines was the first Asian country which dispatched troops to defend the Republic of Korea during the Korean War, sending the largest number of troops among Asian nations.

In the call today, President Marcos and I highlighted that the ROK has become the Philippines’ largest investment partner, and we agreed to further expand our mutually beneficial collaboration in areas such as shipbuilding, the defense industry, and infrastructure including sea bridges and railways.

Furthermore, I expressed my appreciation for the fact that more than 100,000 Filipino workers have contributed to deepening the bonds of friendship between our two countries. I also emphasized my commitment to further boost efforts to ensure stable living conditions for foreign workers in Korea.

I very much look forward to meeting with President Marcos at the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and other occasions to discuss ways to further promote our partnership and tackle global challenges together.
